In this week’s Mass / Study period, all Pastoral groups participated in our launch of Solidarity Week 2020! Solidarity Week will look different this year, but its significance is just as important.

Marcellin College usually celebrates Solidarity Week during the week of Champagnat Day. On Champagnat Day, the school outs on a day of celebration and asks students to donate $10 each, all of which goes directly to the Marist community that supports the people of Pailin in Cambodia. During Solidarity Week, students are also traditionally asked to donate non-perishable food or hygiene products which are donated to the Exodus Community in West Heidelberg. These two communities that have Marists living and working within them – one near, the other far – provide us with opportunities to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in need. While we have missed out on many fun and exciting opportunities this year, the communities of Pailin and West Heidelberg have missed out on our support through our fundraising and donation drives. The process may be slightly different this year, but Marcellin College asks for your support to honour our commitment to Pailin and the Exodus Community who rely on our donations.

Rather than collecting cash, this year we have set up an online donation link and ask all students to donate $10 (or what they and their families can) in the attempt to raise as close as possible to the $14,000+ we usually donate to Pailin after Champagnat Day. Families can access the donation link in their emails or at this link Between now and next Thursday October 22, Year 7s are asked to donate toothpaste, toothbrushes or soap through their RE classes, and Years 11 and 12 students are asked to donate non-perishable food (such as pasta, tinned foods, sauces) either through their RE classes or at Student Services. When we are lucky enough to have our other year levels onsite we will nominate a week for them to make their practical donations.

While all money raised will be donated to the Marists supporting the people of Pailin, Cambodia, the donated toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and non-perishable food will be donated to the Exodus Community in West Heidelberg. Any support that you can offer our Solidarity Week campaign will be greatly appreciated; your donations will go straight to people in need. Thank you in anticipation.
